How Bacteriostatic Water Works

The Science, Simplified

The Gold Standard for Reconstitution

Bacteriostatic Water (USP grade) is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol. This specific concentration of benzyl alcohol acts as a bacteriostatic preservative, inhibiting the growth of most potentially contaminating bacteria.
Key insight: Unlike sterile water, which must be discarded after a single use, the preservative in BAC water allows the vial to be accessed multiple times. In research settings, this makes it the standard diluent for transforming lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides into a stable liquid solution for study.

28-Day Multi-Use Window

Once the rubber stopper of a Bacteriostatic Water vial is punctured, the benzyl alcohol maintains the sterility of the solution for up to 28 days.

Key insight: This multi-dose capability is critical for long-term research protocols. It allows a single vial of solvent to reconstitute multiple peptide vials over a four-week period, significantly reducing research costs and waste while maintaining strict aseptic standards.

Peptide-Safe Stability

BAC water is specifically formulated to be non-pyrogenic and maintains a pH range of 4.5 to 7.0, which is compatible with the vast majority of synthetic peptides.

Key insight: The low preservative concentration ensures that the chemical structure of the peptide is not denatured or degraded during reconstitution. This stability is essential for ensuring that research results remain accurate and reproducible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Bacteriostatic Water

No. Distilled or tap water is not sterile and contains no preservatives. Using non-sterile water will introduce bacteria into your peptide vial, which will degrade the research compound within hours and could lead to contaminated results. Bacteriostatic Water is the only recommended solvent for multi-dose peptide research.
The amount depends on your desired concentration. Most researchers use 1mL or 2mL of BAC water per peptide vial. Using 1mL creates a more concentrated solution (more peptide per unit), while 2mL makes it easier to measure out very small doses accurately.
While the benzyl alcohol inhibits growth, its effectiveness can diminish over time once the seal is repeatedly punctured and exposed to air. To maintain the highest research standards and prevent any risk of microbial buildup, the 28-day rule is the industry standard for USP bacteriostatic products.
Unopened vials of Bacteriostatic Water do not need to be refrigerated and should be kept at room temperature. However, once you use the water to turn a dry peptide into a liquid, that reconstituted peptide vial must be stored in the refrigerator at 2-8°C.
Bacteriostatic Water should always be as clear as a mirror. If you see any cloudiness, discoloration, or "floaties," the vial has been compromised and should be discarded immediately. Never risk your research peptides by using a suspicious solvent.
